Sikhs in Canada
How Sikhs arrived
Sikhs reached British Columbia in the early 1900s and opened their first Gurdwara in Vancouver in 1908. In 1914 the ship Komagata Maru, carrying mostly Sikh passengers, was turned away from Vancouver, a story Canada formally apologised for in 2016.
The 2021 census counted about 771,000 Sikhs in Canada, the largest Sikh population outside India.
